Species #51: Unidentified Ant

Ant

Unidentified Ant:
Lasius sp.

There are only 19 species of ants known from Alaska, so I am guessing this is one of them. There were lots of these ants taking advantage of the blooming Cow Parsnip. Presumably it was food related, but I am not sure whether it was pollen or nectar that they were getting.

  1. This is ant from the genus Lasius. I am not able to tell if the species is neoniger of pallitarsus (=sitkaensis).

  2. Thanks, Dave. I have photos of ants getting ready to fly that may be the same species as this (they were at different locations, though in the same town). I’m not sure if that would make it easier to identify or not.
