Did you convince them to break trail for you since they were wearing snow shoes?
It didn’t take any convincing – they were fairly happy to wander out there on their own, I just had to direct them where we were going. Unfortunately, even following their trail I was sinking in over my knees, so it was still quite strenuous. Much easier on the way back when I followed my tracks back out (though I did take a brief try at wallowing in untouched fresh snow, it didn’t take long to give that up).
Maybe we should start recruiting kids as trail breakers for our snow tracking surveys (though really they usually aren’t too bad).
