Mystery Fungus

This entry is part 80 of 133 in the series 2011 Photojournal

Pictures of a fungus collected at the recent bioblitz in Juneau. It so far has proved to be a stumper, with even experienced mycologists not recognizing it, despite it’s distinctive coarse hair-like appearance.

  1. Found a similar one Outside on top of a tarp. Weather is dry right now. When touched it releases a cloud of dark dust which must be it’s spores. Brown base and black hairs in Burnaby bc

  2. I have one too in my yard found after blowing leaves. I live in RI on a lake. Have never seen anything like it and I ended up with hives after taking pictures of it up close. It’s between a bunch of other strange looking mushrooms

  3. I came across something like this but back in April in woods near where I live I Bolton Lancashire. It was more bristle like, approximately 25 mm long, very stiff and much more spaced out. The nearest I’ve seen in my search is a Staghorn fungus but, whereas the Staghorn has white tips, this one is all black. I collected a sample and have kept it “ alive” since I found it, but it is unchanged.
