Pictures of a fungus collected at the recent bioblitz in Juneau. It so far has proved to be a stumper, with even experienced mycologists not recognizing it, despite it’s distinctive coarse hair-like appearance.
On a Lifelong Journey to Learn my Place
Found the same specimen in Newfoundland Canada, has everybody stumped?
Interesting – later it was thought to possibly be an old Gloiodon. In Sitka I’ve found one that I’ve been told is Gloiodon occidentale https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/12260134
Found a similar one Outside on top of a tarp. Weather is dry right now. When touched it releases a cloud of dark dust which must be it’s spores. Brown base and black hairs in Burnaby bc
I have one too in my yard found after blowing leaves. I live in RI on a lake. Have never seen anything like it and I ended up with hives after taking pictures of it up close. It’s between a bunch of other strange looking mushrooms
Sharon – I wonder if what you saw was a slime mold. They sometimes look like you describe when they get to the spore releasing stge
STEMONITIS SPLENDENS
It does look similar to Stemonitis, but it was not fragile like a slime mold would be
I came across something like this but back in April in woods near where I live I Bolton Lancashire. It was more bristle like, approximately 25 mm long, very stiff and much more spaced out. The nearest I’ve seen in my search is a Staghorn fungus but, whereas the Staghorn has white tips, this one is all black. I collected a sample and have kept it “ alive†since I found it, but it is unchanged.
