Species #37: Buckbean

Filed under: Vascular Plants — goff @ 10:52 pm

Buckbean

Buckbean
Menyanthes trifoliata

This plant is common in areas with standing water, though it seems to have a preference for water that flows just a little more than the typical muskeg puddle. Perhaps it’s a preference for a range of pHs and straight muskeg puddles are too acidic.

  1. Not sure I’d agree, I’ve seen it growing in plenty of stagnant looking ponds. There is an oxygen meter around that also tests pH, this might be a question that can be answered. Heterostyly?

  2. I spent alot of time in the past looking at a population of this species in a very muskegy muskeg in Bably Bear Bay. Some time I’ll beg to use the oxygen meter for an afternoon.
