Two days ago, Dad called me when he was done with work and asked if I wanted to go watch the whales. It was sunny out and I didn’t really have anything better to do, so I decided to go.
I was ready and outside a few minutes later, it was a bit windy so I went and stood in the sun to wait for dad.
When I was going to get in, Dad asked me if I really wanted to go without my coat and told me that it was windy out at Whale Park, so I went back inside and got my coat.
When we got to the park, there were quite a few cars there and a few people in the viewing shelter. As we parked, a few other people, who I’m guessing just got there, ran over to the viewing shelter.
We didn’t go to the viewing shelter, instead, we walked down the path a little ways and down multiple sets of stairs. When we got to the end of the stairs, I went out on the platform and dad went down to check out the rocks below, then called me down.
There were a few other people already there on the other side of the rocks out of sight. There were also a group of Sea lions out a little ways that stayed pretty much in the same area throughout the two hours that we were there, though a few did move away now and then.
It was windy, but the sun kept me warm. Dad claimed the only good sitting spot where we were in my opinion and I was stuck sort of leaning on a sloped smooth part of the rock or crouching down, though he moved later and I claimed his spot.
While we were watching the whales, some split off from the main group and headed our way. Two times, they breached, the first time I was looking away, so didn’t get a picture and only saw the middle and end of it. The second time I was looking, but I still didn’t get a picture, though dad did. Those whales went out of sight.
The group that was in sight, but farther out did some bubble net feeding, which I got a few photos of, and they lunged a few times, most of which I was looking the the other direction because it looked like the gulls were gathering.
There were two boats out on the water as well, which hung around where the bubble net feeding whales were.
A few of the whales that had gone out of sight came back towards the group that hadn’t gone out of sight. I don’t know if all of them had rejoined by the time we left.
While we were out there, I also saw some loons and got a few photos of them.
By the time we left, it had been about two hours and the whales had gone out pretty far.
I forgot to mention that the sun reflecting off the water was bright, and was most of the time in the corner of my vision if I didn’t block it with my hands, so my eyes hurt from squinting and I wished I’d brought some sunglasses. Someone who was there did. They left before we did.
