Today on my way to days I saw two groups of baby common merganser they looked like they had just hatched maybe a week or less earlier. They are the first newly hatched common merganser chicks I have ever seen and they are so cute. Normally when I see young common mergansers they are already feathered but this time thankfully I got to see them before then. I did a bit of reading on common mergansers and it turns out that they can nest with in a mile from water. They also can nest up to 100 feet off the ground. the chick only stay in the nest for a day or two before they head for water. They often times nest in tree cavity’s or wood pecker holes.
