Pinks are in at the Sheldon Jackson hatchery, and Connor was pretty enthusiastic about catching them.

Grebes and a Caterpillar
At least three still-downy Pied-billed Grebes were hanging out on Swan Lake waiting to be fed by parents. Also today, Connor found a green caterpillar crawling on the sidewalk. He brought it home and we were going to try to find it a food plant, but discovered it just wanted to bury itself in dirt, so we left it in a small bucket of dirt inside a rearing cage on the porch to see what might emerge.
Indian River Valley on a Wet Day
Went for a hike up Indian River valley to take care of the ibuttons. It was a very soggy day. Found a couple of things that prompted me to pull out the camera despite the abundance of rain – a common plant in an unusual (for it) location, and a fungus I don’t remember having seen before.
Tufted Puffin
Had a chance to get out with a couple of visitors on a tour with Jim Seeland of Sitka Sound Tours. They were interested in seeing birds out on the water and so Jim asked me to come along. The weather wasn’t particularly pleasant out in the sound, so we stuck to inside waters south of town where I was able to photograph this Tufted Puffin in Redoubt Bay.
Pair of Feathers
I noticed this pair of yellow feathers drifting slowly down outside my window this evening. I’m not sure where they came from, but my guess is a warbler got caught (or maybe only nearly caught) by a raptor.
Deer Mouse
Connor has been working on various traps for some time now and lately he got a friends’ dad to help him build a wooden box trap. He and Rowan were pretty excited to catch a deer mouse and brought it home for me to take some pictures of.
