Grabbed this photo on the way to UAS this afternoon. Boats in town for the herring fishery continue to be tied up several deep along the transient floats of the local harbors.
The Fish and Game biologist reported there were large numbers of Herring in Crescent Bay even after the opening there last week. They have now been spawning for 2 or 3 days along the shoreline – coloring the water a pale green.
The kids and I had time to stop by Swan Lake after lunch today. Two juvenile Trumpeter Swans are still spending most of their time on the lake, though the adults they wintered with seem to have moved on.
After stopping by Marge and Tedin’s to start getting caught up on several weeks of cards, I noticed some Skunk Cabbage up and getting ready to bloom – the first I’ve seen this year.
Herring spawning was taking place at Sage Beach. Connor joined the gulls in trying to take advantage of the opportunity, and managed to come home with several fish.
The kids and I went up Herring Cove Trail to the Bear Mountain Waterfall viewpoint again today. There was some snow on the trail, though not much ice remains compared to how it was last month. The picture was taken as we made our way down near the top of the steep section.
The Herring Sac Roe fishery has been completed. With its completion most of the extra boats in town have moved on, leaving the harbors looking a little more normal without boats stacked up 3 and 4 deep on the transient floats
