Overcast through most of the morning, becoming quite rainy in the afternoon. Gusty winds late in the day. Temperatures in the 40s.
I met up with some visiting scientists late this morning. One of them is Gavin, who I met and spent some time with while he was in town last fall. He brought one of his graduate students, and a Post-doc who will be taking lead on the project they are starting. We were also joined by Kitty and later Zach.
They’re working on getting oriented and beginning the process of figuring out logistics for their field work. It was a chance to talk about trees, and especially cedars.

After the visit, I drove them out to see where herring were spawning. The most intense milky water was off Pioneer Park, though I heard folks had been fishing for them at Sandy Beach earlier.
We also went out to Herring Cove so they could see it. However, visibility wasn’t so great.
After dropping them off, I spent some time watching the channel. Long-liners have started delivering, and there were more gulls in the channel.
A California Gull (first I’ve seen this year) acted like it wanted to land at the ramp, but before it had even fully touched down, it was off again. I wasn’t 100% sure about the id from the brief initial look I had, but was able to get sufficient confirmatory photos as it flew over the channel.
I finished up the last of formatting and revisions on the report I’ve been working on. It was more involved than any of the ones I’ve previously written, so I’m a little less confident in it than I might otherwise be. So far I’ve never had one come back with a request for clarification or revisions, so we’ll see if this one is the first.
