Mostly cloudy with showers. Primarily rain, but graupel mixing in at times. Temperatures around 40F and light to moderate winds.
Snow level (where it accumulates on the trees) was down further today. I think to 1500 feet or below.
The weather has turned a bit volatile. This sort of weather is sometimes called “herring weather” by Sitkans because of its association with this time of year. As someone I chatted briefly with in the grocery parking lot remarked, “I saw hail this morning and thought the herring should be here soon.”
It’s not always this way, but March does often bring this kind of volatility and the herring. I’ve not noticed any herring boats showing up yet, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they begin arriving within the next few days.
I went for a drive this afternoon.
Along Sawmill Creek Road I noticed the salmonberries are getting close to blooming. I didn’t give a thorough look, so it’s possible some are showing pink already. If the forecast holds up and we have sun with temperatures into the 40s later this week, I suspect some will open up.
In the channel I saw a Pelagic Cormorant with its breeding plumage white patch. It’s the first I’ve seen this year.
I haven’t seen any bees out yet, but someone posted an observation of one visiting a crocus which they observed last week.
The (fast) internet outage had been postponed again until the 12th. The last update is from then until the 20th. For now it feels handy to continue to have internet, but I may feel differently on the other end.
