Neighborhood Walk

Overcast with gusty winds out of the east. Temperatures into the low 40s.

A comment about a background lichen showing in one of my observations from Thursday prompted me to head back to the Baranof Street connector for another look.

With vague hopes of crossing paths with the Northern Shrike, I decided to walk a bit of a loop.

Dry Peltigera britannica
When dry, Peltigera britannica is a pale gray with a hint of green.

I took better pictures of the lichen. It turned out to be Peltigera britannica, which is what I had assumed at the time. However, I don’t usually see it growing on thin diameter wood like the false azalea stem this was growing on.

Wet Peltigera britannica
When wet, Peltigera britannica is a deep green.

I continue to be impressed by how much (and rapidly) these lichens change colors from dry to wet.

Other people were walking around the cemetery area, so I chose to keep moving instead of stopping to look around more.

Swan Lake

Swan Lake remains covered in ice, but no one was on it. Perhaps in part due to the layer of water that had formed on the surface. With the winds and warmer temperatures I imagine some of the water is surface melt. Maybe all of it is, but I wonder if some also spilled over from the edges.

Ravens Interacting in Flight

Throughout the walk, I noticed ravens seemed to be enjoying the windy weather. Sometimes it looks almost like they are fighting in mid-air, but maybe it is more like a raven equivalent of social dance.

No one else showed up for ultimate. I didn’t post a reminder (having mixed feeling myself about wanting to play), and I imagine that didn’t help. Someone was on the field clearing a section of it. I suspect someone who plays soccer was getting ready for a chance to play tomorrow (their normal day to use the field).

I did check to see if the pigeon remains were still there, but they were gone. I wonder if a neighborhood cat, or possibly rats took it away.

My iNaturalist Observations for Today (Today’s observations marked a milestone. I now have a streak of 1500 days with at least one iNaturalist observation.)
