Sunny start to February

Clear and cold. Gusty winds with temperatures in the 20s.

Overnight lows didn’t drop as far forecast. The official low did not appear to get below 20F (14F was forecast).

Gusty winds hit the house last evening and I think through much of the night.

Sunny Silver Bay
Silver Bay on a sunny winter day in Sitka, Alaksa

I went out this afternoon. It was breezy, but from a different direction than yesterday. In Silver Bay the winds definitely seemed down compared to yesterday. The mountain tops remained reasonably clear, and white caps were more scattered..

Sawmill Cove Barge

Water-based construction work must have wrapped up. The large barge was gone, and the smaller barge was pulled out and seemed to be getting ready to leave.

Open Water
Temperatures have been plenty cold to freeze the lake, so I’m curious what prevented the ice from completely covering the water here. Swan Lake in Sitka, Alaska

Swan Lake had folks skating on it. The inflow had frozen since yesterday. Next to the dock, holes in the ice showed water. This surprised me and makes me curious why it hadn’t frozen over there.

Crooked Neck Swan
I’ve never seen a swan flying with a crooked neck. I’m guessing it’s an injury. It looks awkward, but did not seem to prevent it from keeping up with the other birds. Observed over Swan Lake in Sitka, Alaska

While there, a group of swans flew over. I didn’t notice at the time, but one of them had a crooked neck. If it had been just one photo I might have thought it was doing something besides normal flight movements, but all the photos with this swan in them (it was slightly apart from the group) showed the same posture.

Omega Sun
Omega sun setting over Sitka Sound in Sitka, Alaska

I went to the bridge for sunset. With the water warmer than the air, there was an omega sun, but no green flash (as I’ve noticed previously in similar conditions).

Twilight at Moller Field

No one else showed up for ultimate. While I was waiting in my car, I saw a snow devil spinning across the field. I wished I had been out to see it more closely and maybe get a video.

I more progress on December photojournals. Over half the month is now published.

Yesterday’s micro organism iNaturalist uploads resulted in at least two new species. One apparently a first for iNaturalist.

I received the Black 2.0 – a super black matte paint. I thought it might help to reduce stray light in the microscope when I’m taking pictures. There’s a light ring that shows up especially when using the 40x objective. Only a few days ago (well after ordering), I realized maybe a simple washer would block the light that formed the ring. I cut out a bit of cardboard, and may not have needed the paint, but used it since I had it.

On a quick look, it seemed to help. I’ll see more when I next try to take some photos.
