Overcast with drizzle early in the day. Temperatures in the 40s.
While working on my computer, I was surprised to see a vine weevil walking on it. I have no idea where it came from, though presumably it crawled up me to get to the computer. I’ve noticed several in the house over the past few months. It makes me wonder if they are in my house plants. The larvae like to dig in the soil, and adults will mostly hide in soil during the day, then crawl up to eat on plants at night. Females are parthenogenetic, so maybe one reproduced and I’m seeing the next generation.
I made it out this afternoon. Initially I drove out to Silver Bay, but heavy clouds and wet conditions didn’t incline me to get out, as I initially was thinking I might.
I noticed what looked like a slide on Sugarloaf Mountain. I didn’t remember seeing it before, but I’m not sure. It could be a cloud hanging on the slope right by it drew my attention in a way that caused me to see notice it. It may have also looked more distinctive because there may have been remnant snow left. I haven’t consistently tagged Sugarloaf in photos, so it will take a little effort to review photos to see if I can see evidence of it.
I went to Japonski Island and ended up checking epiphytes on one of the planted trees down along Seward Avenue.
A handful of mosses and lichens caught my attention. I got some photos and made collections, as I suspect microscopy will be necessary to get identifications for the mosses.
On a brief stop to look at the channel, I saw a young gull fly up and drop something. It didn’t seem to follow up to check and see if whatever it was cracked open. I feel I’ve seen gulls do this before. I wonder if they are imitating crows without really understanding how it works.
Today I worked on publishing photojournal entries from last month (I made it through the final third of the month). One of them referenced a hike I made in 2000, so I made a photojournal entry for it.
