Slowing Down at Sawmill Cove

Cloudy with occasional showers (including some graupel/hail at times). Moderate to light winds. Temperatures in the 40s.

I was grateful that observing didn’t start until noon today.

Common Loon
Common Loon with slightly overgrown upper bill. Sawmill Cove, Sitka, Alaska

Bird numbers in the cove continue to be lower relative to a month ago. I’m guessing the herring have moved out again.

An exception has been Surf Scoters and Barrow’s Goldeneye. Both were present a month ago, but I’m seeing them more consistently and in larger numbers (though I wouldn’t say large numbers). They’re hanging out over towards Silver Bay Seafoods, so I don’t get close looks at them.

Today the Pacific Loon flock grew during the first two hours of observing. I counted as many as 27. After the impact pile driving started, they moved further out.

Pacific Loons
One of these is not like the others – mostly Pacific Loons with one Pelagic Cormorant. Sawmill Cove, Sitka, Alaska

As I’ve had opportunity to watch the groups of Pacific Loons lately, I have noticed one or two Pelagic Cormorants often join in the group. They aren’t as consistently there, but when they are present, they seem to be hanging with the loons.

None of the observers saw any mammals today. A seal or two have reliably shown themselves at Bear Cove, so it’s curious that there wasn’t one today. I wonder where they were.
