Starrigavan Revisited

Overcast. Light to moderate winds. Temperatures in the 30s.

I went back out to Starrigavan today, again hoping to observe the Swamp Sparrow.

Starrigavan Estuary
Frost persists in Starrigavan Estuary where the sun doesn’t reach this time of year

Today I noticed a clear boundary line of frost in the trees which I took to represent the extent of where direct sun reached into the valley.

I heard a call as I was walking along the section just after crossing the bridge. I paused to listen, but didn’t hear it again until I started walking. This happened two or three times.

As I continued, the call sounded closer, and I realized it was the Swamp Sparrow. It was in the grasses not far from the boardwalk in the direction of the creek.

I went down to the grasses hoping for a decent look and maybe some photos. I saw it pop into the open from time to time, making its way around the spur to the far side where I had first seen it last year.

I never got a great look at it, and no pictures, but appreciated the encounter all the same.

Some of us had planned to try playing ultimate on Moller this afternoon. I hadn’t been able to reserve the field, so without lights we started at 2pm. Only 5 showed up, so we couldn’t play a full game. We did play box for a bit. The layer of snow on the field made traction not so great, but it was still fun to play.
