Closing Out 2024

Mostly clear early, becoming overcast. Light to moderate winds. Unusual warm, with temperatures overnight rising to the upper 30s, despite the clear skies.

Morning Light on Gavan Hill
It was 9am before the sun rose high enough to shine on Gavan Hill

It’s been interesting to notice how late the sun is hitting the top of Gavan Hill on these clear mornings. I would have guessed it would be close to sunrise (shortly after 8:30am, these days), but it’s actually not until after 9am.

When I checked this morning, there was still frost, despite the apparently above freezing temperatures. Some of the frost on the roof appeared to be melting, though.

I went out for a drive after lunch. The clouds had moved over, and daylight was not in my favor, so I checked some places to make observations of birds.

My stop at Sea Mart was brief, but I spent more time at the channel.

Beyond Indian River Falls
Connor hiked beyond Indian River falls to access this ridge. I’ve only been up there once, back in August 2000 with my brother.

While there, I took pictures of the ridge Connor went up to on Sunday. It was a route my brother and I took 25 years years ago. Ours was a summer trip, and we made a loop of it, walking the ridge back to (map) Arrowhead Peak and then down into Billy Basin.

I hadn’t really thought about it until my brother and I were talking about that trip during his visit, but he was younger on that hike than Connor is now.

Later in the day I culled many more photos (both image stacks and photos that I just didn’t need to keep). I’ve cleared nearly 200GB of space, which should get me through into the spring (and longer, if I keep working through things).
