Family Walk up Blue Lake Road

Overcast with temperatures in the low 40s. Very windy and rainy early, diminishing rain (and probably wind) as the morning progressed.

My brother wanted to check out the marble outcrop. He leaves Saturday, and tomorrow’s weather is calling for more rain than today. So this morning was the time. Connor and my dad also joined for the out.

We mosied up the hill, with my brother checking out rocks along the way. He picked up a white rock I would have assumed was quartz. He said it was too soft for quartz and may be calcite. To confirm, we would want to see if it had a reaction to acid, but I don’t have strong enough acid to test.

I had thought I might look for bryophytes growing on the exposed marble, but thought better of climbing around on the loose rock with people below.

Instead, I checked out some of the banks along the roadside. I noticed some young yellow cedars and took pictures of three of them.

I also picked up two different mosses.

Scapania undulata Leaf

Later this afternoon, I worked on collections I made earlier this month. I still have many in tackle boxes and other containers out on the porch. I’m not sure how many of them will still be good, but I’m hoping for the best.
