Patiently Watching

Clear early, becoming overcast. Light winds. Temperatures into the 40s.

I was surprised it was getting light when I woke up around 7am. I was expecting cloudy weather, but soon realized it was basically clear. I think the clearing must not have happened too long before sunrise, as the frost was not very heavy on my car.

Apparently the clearing was something of a surprise, as the forecast was still calling for 100% cloud cover.

As the sun rose, one small-ish cloud above Lucky Chance (at least from my perspective) caught the light in a way that was compelling to me.

Fishing for a Pipe
A pipe obstructed the pile driving effort, so they tried (successfully) to get a cable looped around it so they could move it out of the way

There were delays in the work, first due to an old pipe that was in the way. They managed to loop a cable around it and pull it out of the way. That took an hour or more. Later they had a mechanical difficulty that delayed driving the second piling.

One nice thing about the enforced patience of this job is some of the opportunities that come up to take pictures of birds that come by the dock.

Pacific Loon

Today Pacific Loons were presenting well. I hadn’t seen so many of them in recent days. As many as 9 at a time were in the cove, sometimes surfacing right near the barge.

I wasn’t always able to take advantage of the opportunities. I didn’t catch the Thick-billed Murre when I might have liked. I also saw cormorants surfacing with a fish still in its beak. I wasn’t fast enough to get shots of them (with a hope of identifying the fish).

Sundog

With the delays, today ended up being a long-ish day of work. The way they’re proceeding with the work now, it looks like most days will be shorter (3-5 hours) unless they have delays (which aren’t uncommon in this line of work).
