Morning Drive

Mostly cloudy with light winds. Frosty overnight, but temperatures into the 40s.

Northern Flicker
The shafts on this flicker are about as close to yellow as we tend to see in Sitka. Birds here are typically integrades, though usually with redder shafts.

A closer-to-yellow-shafted Northern Flicker landed on the neighbor’s roof not long after I was up and about this morning. Most of the ones I see here have red shafts (though face/head markings are more consistent with what’s expected on yellow-shafted). Only rarely have I seen shafts that look closer to yellow (not striking yellow, but definitely more orange than red). In those cases, face/head markings have been more consistent with red-shafted.

I was not feeling too ambitious today, but did go for a drive late this morning.

I saw 13 Trumpeter Swans at Starrigavan. Also Green-winged Teal. I’m not surprised some are around, but I hadn’t noticed any since we settled into the more winter season.

Three Canada Geese flew over when I was parked at the kelp patch pullout.

Swan Lake was apparently cold enough that a layer of ice covered over 95% of it after just one night of near freezing temperatures. Considering the forecast, I expect it will melt off again this week.

Last night I got my Christmas Bazaar photo sales into my spreadsheet. I ended up having 15 images that were first time sales. Of those, 3 were brand new for this market. Most of the rest had probably been available for all the markets.

Today I struggled a bit trying to get an ordering page set up for my calendar. I went a more complicated route this time. I worked on setting up WooCommerce on my website. In principle, if I get that going, I can sell stuff there. Alternatively, I could set up an online shop through Square (which is the point of sale vendor I use). I had previously tried to set up a pay-now link through Square to keep things simple, but I couldn’t work out a way to allow for shipping for out of town orders and no shipping for local orders. I ended up having the same issue with the setup on my website.

I also was slowed down a little by issues with my site. It may be due to a bloated database. I began looking into suggestions for cleaning it up. Hopefully that will help. If not, then I may consider trying to reinstall the site from scratch, but given the 15+ years of posts and photos, that could be a lot of work.
