Warm, Calm, and Dry

Overcast with rain late in the day. Temperatures into the lower 50s again. Light winds.

Yesterday’s high got to 56F, breaking the previous record for the day (52F in 1989). It looks like today’s high will tie the previous record.

I was out at Sawmill Cove before sunrise. Today there was a little pink in the upper layer of clouds, but it did not last long.

Calm and dry conditions prevailed through the morning hours I was observing.

Mammals were mostly absent. The only one observed was the Humpback Whale, but today it stayed in Bear Cove and beyond. Apparently there are many young herring, even close to shore.

I saw a Thick-billed Murre again today. It stayed a little further out this time.

I heard a 3rd-hand report of a Townsend’s Solitaire seen at Pioneer Park earlier in the week. This afternoon I spent some time parked there watching. I also drove some of the neighborhoods uphill of there, but didn’t spot a solitaire. It’s not the first time a solitaire has been seen at Pioneer Park.

Now having more experience with them after some sightings over the past handful of years, I can imagine they may be a little more regular than reports suggest. They would be easy to overlook, as they seem happy to show up in places birders aren’t necessarily looking very often.
