Frost-free Chill

Clear and cold. Light winds in town, but gusty winds out in Silver Bay. Temperatures into the low 30s.

It still hasn’t gotten too far below freezing at night around my house. The hummingbird feeder has remained unfrozen. Based on minimal frost, it seems the air is relatively dry as well. A quick check shows relative humidity has been down in the 40% range, with dew point at 20F or below.

I spent part of the morning getting things ready for observing work. I also did some tidying upstairs and looked into the part of the heating system that failed. I made progress on all three, including a temporary work around for the heating system that should help during this cold snap.

After lunch I checked Swan Lake and the channel before heading out the road for a meeting with the other observers and the person who is our contact with the construction company.

I wasn’t surprised to find it windy with more snow out there, but the contrast in strength of wind compared to town was more than I would have guessed. It wasn’t too bad right at Sawmill Cove (an occasional gust, but otherwise light winds). Out on the bay there were steady white caps, however.

We finished up with just enough time for me to get the the bridge for sunset.

Orange Skies over Sitka Sound

Today the sky was clear to the horizon. It was a very clean sunset without a hint of green flash. We’re due to start observing tomorrow, so it’s not so likely that I will be able to watch for the green flash in the coming weeks.
