Another Starrigavan High Tide

Mostly cloudy with regular showers. Moderate winds and temperatures into the lower 40s.

High Tide along Nelson Logging Road
The measured high tide for Sitka was 12.8 ft, easily high enough to cover the low area on the path along Nelson Logging Road in Sitka, Alaska

I went out to Starrigavan for high tide again today. The rain and was much diminished compared to yesterday, but the tide was distinctly higher.

High Tide along Nelson Logging Road

In addition to covering more of the low area close to the main road, parts of the trail further up along Nelson Logging Road were also covered.

I saw eagles perched in trees around the estuary, and at least one that seemed to attempt to grab something out of the water. I think it was unsuccessful (though I was far enough way, it was hard to be sure).

I didn’t pish today, and perhaps for that reason didn’t see many sparrows.

Winter Spanworm Moth (<em>Operophtera occidentalis</em>)

Last night I saw two winter spanworms at my porch, one was still there this morning. Given the wet and blustery weather, I was a little surprised. In some prior years I’ve first seen them a bit earlier (even as early as October, though more often in November). However, this is well within the range of dates I’ve typically observed them.
