Old Sitka Section of Cross Trail

Overcast with occasional rain. Temperatures in the 40s.

My dad had never been on the Old Sitka section of the cross trail, and was interested in seeing it.

Resting on the Marge and Tedin Memorial Bench
My dad takes a break on the bench dedicated to Marge Ward and Marlys Tedin, who helped me out with birding when I was just getting started 20 years ago.

After a late-ish lunch, daylight was limited. Connor went along. This allowed us to take two vehicles, so we could just walk it as a one-way trip.

Along the way, my dad wanted to look for cranberries. We found more than I expected. I thought folks would have picked ones close to the trail. I imagine people did, but they definitely missed some.

Four swans flew heading towards Starrigavan over while we were walking. They’re the first I’ve noticed this fall. I checked Starrigavan after we were done with the walk, but didn’t see them there.

Connor pointed out places he has previously hunted and told me about routes he had taken (some easier than others).

Cedar Decline
This is perhaps the only location I know of where cedar decline is accessible from along the road system

I was also interested in the cedar decline that I had noticed from the boat previously, but which doesn’t seem visible from anywhere on the road.

There was enough of it that I was a little surprised that I hadn’t made note of previously.

Liverwort (<em>Scapania umbrosa</em>)
Liverwort – probably Scapania umbrosa growing on dead wood near the Cross Trail in Sitka, Alaska

By the time we reached the big muskeg in the fading light I still hadn’t made any observations for the day. While my dad looked for berries, I checked out some epiphytes on some of the trees near the trail.
