Rest Day

Showery weather, with a little bit more sun today than yesterday. Temperatures in the low 40s. The snow level appeared to be down to around 2000 feet or so.

Cook Inlet Gull

I didn’t spend much time out today, but did take pictures of gulls at the channel and gulls and ducks at Swan Lake.

Immature Short-billed Gull
Immature Short-billed Gull at Swan Lake in Sitka, Alaska

Among the gulls at Swan Lake was a Short-billed Gull. I don’t often see them there. They do nest on fresh water, and I have seen them on other lakes around near Sitka during the summer, but not Swan Lake. In the non-breeding season don’t seem to leave salt water much, except perhaps to feed on salmon eggs or carcasses on rivers (even then, I don’t recall seeing them above the lower reaches). I don’t remember seeing them loafing on the the buildings around town with the larger gulls either.

Liverwort
Livewort – maybe Cephalozia bicuspidata found on Kruzof Island near Sitka, Alaska

I dipped into last Friday’s collections, but didn’t get very far. I started feeling extra tired. It’s continuing the pattern that makes me feel like I might be fighting off illness. I mostly feel pretty good in the morning, but more tired and a little off by the end of the day.

With Connor recovering from pneumonia, and Rowan diagnosed with it today, I am trying to take care to get plenty of rest. I certainly would prefer not to come down with it (nor spread it to my dad).
