Brief Observations on a Late October Day

Overcast, calm winds and temperatures in the 40s.

Though winds remained calm and the rain mostly held off today, I didn’t spend much time outside. I had a couple of errands to take care of this afternoon, and went for a drive afterwards.

Gulls
Gulls on the roof of North Pacific Seafoods – I think mostly hybrid (Cook Inlet) gulls.

I made a brief check of the gulls at the channel (including on North Pacific Seafoods), and checked Silver Bay.

Sitka Willow (<em>Salix sitchensis</em>)
Sitka Willow (Salix sitchensis) holding on to some leaves late into fall along Sawmill Creek Road in Sitka, Alaska

After noticing the willow that seemed different along the seawalk recently, I’m taking more notice of willows I’m seeing with leaves still on. Today I took a closer look at one across from the smaller pullout along Silver Bay. It seemed fine for Sitka willow. Though the leaves were kind of tough (I guess I’ve mostly noticed them earlier in the season, and haven’t toughened up yet) the fuzzy underside was what I expected.

This evening I finally labeled the collections from my mid-month trip up Harbor Mountain. It ended up being the last real collecting above treeline for the year.

Blytt's Rock Moss (<em>Andreaea blyttii</em>)
I’m not positive, but I think this is a leaf from Blytt’s Rock Moss (Andreaea blyttii) found on Harbor Mountain.

In addition to getting the labels done, I took pictures and came to at least a couple of tentative identifications. If the names I came to hold up, they’re both new-to-me species. (I may have prior observations/collections of the moss species, but this is the first one I’ve identified.)
