Breaking Clouds after Heavy Rain

Heavy showers throughout the day with short periods of sun between. Windy. Temperatures into the lower 50s.

I went out for a drive this afternoon to make sure I got some observations.

Island and Clouds

Highlights included nice light and dramatic clouds.

I went out Halibut Point Road initially.

Red-throated Loon

I saw a Red-throated Loon off the kelp patch pullout. It’s the first of those I’ve seen well enough to identify this fall.

View of Silver Bay from Sawmill Cove

I had planned to go home, but another break in the sun compelled me to continue, and I drove out to Silver Bay.

I watched from the dock in Sawmill Cove, though no birds came particularly close.

Humpback Whale

Driving back in towards town, I noticed a whale or two. That prompted me to stop and try to get a better look at them.

Apparently I just happened to catch them as they were heading out of the bay.

I first watched from further out the road near where I first saw them, but did not see one surface again.

When I finally caught sight of them from Whale Park, I saw at least two, though not close together. Both were well out from the mouth of Silver Bay, and seemed to be moving even further out.
