Big Waves at Buoy

Overcast with a bit of sun in the afternoon. Breezy. Rain, mostly in the morning. Temperatures in the 50s.

The wind built up again during the day, but continued to be out of the east.

Checking the Cape Edgecumbe buoy, I saw wave heights peaked at 39 feet early this morning.

Looking at the plots of wave direction compared to wind I think the really big waves were generated offshore (probably on the south side of the low center), and travelled in towards the coast line.

I went out this afternoon to look around.

Wood Ducks
Pair of Wood Ducks at Swan Lake in Sitka, Alaska

Several new waterfowl were at the lake. These included a pair of Wood Ducks, pintails, shovelers, teals, and wigeons. The first coot of the fall was also there.

Breaking Waves
Waves breaking on rocks iin Sitka Sound

I walked up on O’Connell Bridge to check out the waves crashing on rocks out in the sound. Some were impressive, but not as dramatic as I’ve seen in the past. I’m not sure if the waves were just bigger on the previous time, or the direction was more conducive to making the large splashes as they broke on Vitskari Island and rocks.
