Overcast and windy. Temperatures in the 50s with scattered rain and later heavier showers.
The wind didn’t pick up until later this morning, but was gusting pretty good by midday.
I didn’t get out until early afternoon.
Kitty was staying in town due to the wind, so we drove out to Silver Bay to see what it was like.
The low pressure is still hundreds of miles from here, but the winds we experienced were part of a long stretch of strong winds blowing out of the east towards it. I tend to associate straight east winds more with cold outflow events. Silver Bay tends to be one of the better places to see them and their strongest.
I wasn’t seeing many swirly williwaws, but there were was plenty of spray being picked up by the stronger gusts.
At the airport, it was not quite as windy, though still plenty of movement.
We walked old airport road, and got a quick look at a harrier inside the airport fence.
On the return, a Merlin was perched on a wire. It seemed to be intently looking, I imagine for song birds.

An arriving plane was on approach that at times seemed like it was at an angle into the wind with respect to its direction of travel. I couldn’t see it land, so wasn’t able to tell if it maintained that angle, or straightened out as got close to the ground (I suspect the latter).
Winds were forecast to increase and peak late this afternoon into early evening. They called for gusts to 60mph. That might have happened somewhere in the area, but not at the airport. It remained windy into the evening, but not much more than it had been late this morning.
This evening I printed photos in preparation for Saturday’s fall market. Last year I did well at this market, so I’m hopeful for this one. I won’t have my printed calendars to sell, but should have at least the proof they sent me. I plan to have it on display and take orders for the calendars (which I think I should have by next week).
I also uploaded photojournals from mid July through the end of August. The last time I had worked on them was mid August. The 2+ weeks of internet outage caused things to pile up more than they would have otherwise, and I’m still digging out from it.
