Sunny Sit at Little Magic Island

Clear and cool. Official temperatures down to 20F overnight with high around freezing. I suspect it was cooler at my house overnight, and similar during the day. Lighter winds.

When I headed out around midday, I was surprised to see the wind coming out of the southeast. It was not strong, but in this weather it doesn’t take much to feel chilly.

Out Halibut Point Road the wind was coming more out of the north or northeast, as expected for this sort of weather. I imagine the southeast wind in town was due to some sort of wraparound effect as it came out of Silver Bay.

I stopped at Little Magic Island hoping to find a spot on the beach in the sun but out of the wind. It wasn’t totally out of the wind, but good enough. (Had it been more sheltered, I probably wouldn’t have stayed quite so bundled up.)

I spent the better part of an hour enjoying the feeling of sun on my face and occasionally seeing what birds were about.

When I arrived a flock of crows was active. They appeared to be picking at king crab shells. Fresh king crab had been for sale over the weekend, so I suspect someone dumped the shells.

When I first arrived, I didn’t see any birds on the water. Later on there were two Common Goldeneye (not a place I would have expected to see them) and three Horned Grebes.

I also saw a Northern Flicker fly by. After waiting more than two months for my first, I’ve now seen one four out of five days since.
