Shoreline Sightings and Snowy Summits

Frosty morning with overcast through the day. Light winds and snow very late.

I went out Halibut Point Road to see what I could see this afternoon. I continue to hope that I might cross paths with a Yellow-billed Loon, but so far that hasn’t happened.

I saw more birds today than I had yesterday at my stops, but things were still much quieter from Harbor Point than they had been last week.

A sea otter was not too far off shore at the kelp patch pullout. As I’ve observed in the past, an immature gull was hanging out by it. Presuably hoping to pick up a scrap or two.

I was starting to head home, but I wasn’t entirely satisfied with my observations for the day. I stopped to visit the rock beach south of Harbor Point.

The tide was still quite high, but I did have enough room to check out the handful of larger boulders on the beach.

I was mostly focusing on lichens, and took pictures of several different ones. A couple were ones I recognized and have names for, a couple others I recognized and don’t really have names for. Yet others seemed unfamiliar to me.

On my way in, I noticed the snow-covered mountains standing out against darker gray clouds behind them. It’s a seasonal sort of look that I enjoy, so I made a couple of brief stops to take pictures. They aren’t likely to be ones I think are worth printing, but they do have some personal meaning and help remind me of ways I appreciate this place.
