Overcast and breezy. Warmer temperatures into the 40s. Rain held off until later this evening.
The white neck patches make this Pelagic Cormorant distinctive. I've seen it several times at Sawmill Cove
I went out to Silver Bay shortly before midday. I sat at the dock for 15 minutes watching for birds.
While scanning further out, I noticed a pod of Killer Whales surfacing.
I saw them a couple different times before moving to a pullout along the road closer to town. I hoped I might get a better look from this vantage point.
It was a few minutes before I saw them again. This time they were inside the white buoy out in the middle of the bay. I probably would have a better view from the dock. They were on the move, so I didn’t try to go back.
It was a bit longer before I saw them surface again. They seemed to be near the far shoreline. It’s difficult to tell how close, but certainly much closer to that side than my side.
They surfaced a couple more times as they swam out of the bay.
When I left, I had been thinking I would go for a short walk in the forest. By the time I was done watching Killer Whales, it seemed time to head back towards town.
I saw the three Wood Ducks and coot at Swan Lake. The crane was up along the parking lot at the upper part of Moller Park.
This evening I decided to give up on trying to post photojournal posts (even just selected highlights) from the fall before moving on with current entries. I posted Sitka Nature shows from the past couple of months, and will work on posting new stuff in the coming days.
