Crane on a Frosty Field

Mostly sunny and continuing cold.

Much of my day was devoted to getting the house ready for visiting family who arrived this evening.

I did get out for a bit this afternoon.

A Hermit Thrush flew across in front of me along Lake Street. It perched in a tree long enough for me to stop and try to get a couple of photos.

I checked the kelp patch turnaround, but it was mostly quiet there. A sapsucker flew off from the spruce tree just as I arrived. I waited for a few minutes hoping it might come back, but I didn’t see it again.

At Moller Park I saw a couple dozen juncos, but no other song birds.

I was a little surprised to see the Sandhill Crane walking around on the baseball field. I had seen tracks there in the snow previously. With the ground clear of snow, I would not have expected it to spend much time on the artificial turf.

From there I went parked at Sealing Cove and walked to the airport to move a friend’s car.

At the Lazaria Drive feeding area I didn’t see any birds.

They’ve been adding more material in the lagoon lately (though not as much as earlier in the year). A bulldozer was shaping things when I walked by.

I heard a few juncos and probably kinglets in the forest, but didn’t see any birds.

Before going back home, I parked by the brush patch at Sealing Cove. The Brambling showed up while I was there. It’s the first time I’ve seen it in several visits.

The tide has been about 1.5ft below predicted during this cold spell. This evening’s predicted low was -1.2, but the observed level was -2.76. The weather is due to change over the next couple of days, so I suspect the observed will trend back towards predicted. If it doesn’t, we could have a -4 tide on Friday or Saturday evening.
