Enveloping Gray

Low overcast with drizzle through the morning and into the afternoon. Later in the day clouds lifted a bit over the water, but remained socked in along the mountains and in Silver Bay. Winds were calm.

I’ve been trying to come up with a good way to articulate the feeling of the weather today. Perhaps ‘enveloping gray calm’ starts to get there. The atmosphere was about as wet as it could be. Microdroplets of mist limited visibility, and it was very calm. I suspect out on the water it might have been disorienting, but on land I found it peaceful.

My outings today were focused on the airport. I made three trips there hoping to find a Killdeer that had been reported this morning. Finally, in the fading light this evening I refound it (#126) where it had been seen this morning. I’m not sure where it had gone in the meantime, but was happy to get a look at it.

On a a brief stop by the park this afternoon to check more moths, I was a little surprised to hear and then see four Black Oystercatchers flying along the shore out in front of the visitor center (the tide was out a bit).

By the evening, clouds had lifted a bit over the airport and out over the sound. Some lower clouds were still skirting Mt. Edgecumbe.
