This morning I went out to check on the development of a shaggy mane (Coprinus comatus) which had matured a bit since the first time I had checked after hearing about it from Connor.
I have never seen this species fruiting before (though I’ve heard that others have at least a couple of times in the past), but there have been additional reports from Sitka (on iNaturalist), so I wonder if they just need a warmer/drier early fall than we usually get, or something like that.
Connor had texted me about a Blue-winged Teal mixed in with a small flock of Green-winged Teal, so I stopped by and checked on them. It was clear to me that in the fall it would be very easy to miss any Blue-winged Teal mixed in a flock of Green-winged Teal.
This afternoon I went out to Starrigavan with Kitty. There we found a young dyer’s polypore (Phaeolus schweinitzii) growing several feet up the trunk of a spruce tree. This seemed an odd location to me, as usually I’ve seen these growing from the ground near the base of spruce trees. We also checked the birds in the estuary, but did not find anything unexpected. (It continues to be interesting to me how many Song Sparrows seem to be spread across the estuary this time of year).
