Wood Duck

I got a call from Lucy P. this morning to tell that she was looking at a likely female Wood Duck at the upper end of Swan Lake and ask me if I wanted to try and get a picture. I got my stuff together and got over there as quickly as I could. Though the duck had moved down the lake a bit, it was still where we could get to a place for a decent look. It was distant with mediocre light, but I did get a couple of photos that seem reasonable for id purposes, and as best I can tell it is a female Wood Duck (though I would be happy to be corrected on this).

As best I can tell, this is the first documented for the Sitka road system. There was one bagged by a duck hunter north of town last fall, and I’ve got another report of a couple of females seen (but not photographed) on the flume at SJ a couple of years ago.
