21 January Photos: Morning Outing and Moon Rise

This morning I walked around the trails at Starrigavan Recreation Area. This evening Melissa told me the nearly full moon was rising behind the Sisters and I should go out and take a look.

This Bufflehead (Bucephala albeola) had to do a little work to fight through the layer of ice.

Pacific Fir-moss (Huperzia miyoshiana) is fairly common in the forests around Sitka. These were photographed along Mosquito Cove Trail.

Although there was ice in on the water closer to downtown, there was none on the water at Starrigavan. It was not clear to me why this was the case.

I happened to notice this Bald Eagle perched in a tree as the moon was rising, and was lucky enough to be able to find a place where I could get them together.
