Eurasian Collared-Doves have only been reported in Alaska for a couple of years, and I think last summer was the first time any were reported in Sitka. However, their numbers do seem to be expanding, so it remains to be seen how common this bird becomes and in what seasons.
The recording above features a Eurasian Collared-Dove making the lower frequency (compared to other birds) cooing/hooting sound.
We have 4 in our backyard.
July 4, 2011. I think I have a pair of these here by Back Bay in Port Alexander. I am not a birder, but these caught my attention right away.
Thanks for the comment Sue – these doves seem to be getting fairly well established around Southeast. Will be interesting to see if they also take up residence away from human-occupied locations. Also – anytime you see something interesting or want help identifying a bird you might get a picture of, I would love to hear about it. Like so much of Southeast, southern Baranof is one of those places for which there are very few records of what occurs.
the Eurasian collared dove has had a presence in the Mendenhall valley for the past 3 years that i have noticed. they seem to start calling mid summer. don’t know if they arrive earlier.
